Will your book be a softcover or hardcover book? Will it have color or black & white pages? Books come in all shapes and sizes, from pocket books to textbooks. What shape and size will best suit your manuscript?
The books we’re most familiar with are standard sizes for printing: 5.5″ x 8.5″ or 6″ x 9″. But that doesn’t mean you’re limited to those sizes. Suppose your poetry has short lines? A taller, narrower book may better suit your poems. Or, a squarish shape could complement your memoir, allowing ample room for images and narrative.
Your book is unique. Its size, look, and shape will depend on your subject matter, writing style, images, and choice of printing methods. All these are taken into account during the design stage of your book. See examples of fiction and nonfiction books I’ve designed in my book design portfolio.
