Finding images online

Find images for your book design at online image banksAs a book designer, I’m always searching for images. There are several image companies on the Internet that offer photographs and illustrations for sale.

Generally, online images fall into two categories: royalty-free and rights-managed. Royalty-free images can be used for any purpose, and have a fixed price for each size. Rights-managed images are more expensive, and you purchase the right to use the image for a specific purpose (your front cover), for a specific circulation (5,000 copies), and for a specific geographical area (North America).

Simply create an account at an image company using your email and a password, then search for images using keywords or phrases. You can save images in your account and download trial images to try out for free. When you find an image to use for your book, purchase it with a credit card and download it to your computer. Make sure any image you purchase for your book is 300 dpi at the actual size you’re using it.

The image companies listed below are ones I visit often. They are just a few of the many companies you’ll find on the Internet.

iStockPhoto.com My personal favorite! Just enter a word or phrase in the keyword search box, and away you go! You can save images in a lightbox to keep track of the images you’re interested in.
