Published Books: Educational books

Books about education, textbooks and course materials.

Some of these books will educate educators, and others will educate students.

Books for students are usually textbooks or course materials. We're all familiar with hardcover and softcover textbooks, however course materials can be presented in a number of ways. For example, they could be distributed in smaller shrink-wrapped packages, each containing one lesson, and compiled in a binder by the student. To enliven your course materials, consider adding worksheets, quizzes, graphics, or an interactive CD or DVD with tutorials or sample exams.

Brain School
by Howard Eaton, Ed.M.

In Brain School, Howard Eaton explores how, by applying the principles of neuroplasticity, Barbara Arrowsmith Young developed cognitive exercises, founded the Arrowsmith Program, and opened the first Arrowsmith School in Toronto, Ontario, over thirty years ago. Mr. Eaton discusses how he gradually moved from traditional remediation methods for learning disabilities to seeing new possibilities because of the brain’s ability to change itself. The lives of nine children are discussed as they work through the Arrowsmith Program and then move on to either private or public schools.

Social & Emotional Development: Connecting Science and Practice in Early Childhood Settings
by Dave Riley et al

Many time-tested activities that teachers intuitively know help children learn may be perceived by parents and even by some administrators as fluff. Years of research support teachers' insight: these activities are important learning tools that promote children's social and emotional development. This practical and accessible book explains how research shows the effectiveness of such activities and helps teachers answer the question, "Why do we do what we do?"

Picture Science: Using Digital Photography to Teach Young Children
by Carla Neumann-Hinds

Using photography in the early childhood classroom isn’t just about taking pictures: it involves using the camera to make ideas visible, to communicate and collaborate with each other, and to help children explore and understand their world. For these reasons, digital photography can be particularly effective in exploring science in an early childhood classroom. The camera can be a great tool for collecting data, and you can use the images you create to promote observation, recall information, analyze data, demonstrate conclusions, and reflect on the process of learning.
